How to Make Gay Porn Better

I’d like to revisit an earlier post about what I considered to be the sad state of affairs in gay porn. There’s been a change, for the better. Slightly. In the one-in-a-gazillion chance that things have improved as a result of the gay porn industry’s having been following my blogs, allow me to push further.

My complaint has been that gay porn never gets as dirty as straight porn, for the simple reason that, in order to satisfy a higher threshold of nastiness, gay porn would have to be way too unsafe to make. The straight porn scene tends to boast about diligent HIV-screening of their stars (which, if you follow the news, is a boast that was recently shattered when such screenings failed… surprise, surprise); but what I’ve been finding in the gay porn scene takes a different approach: throw caution to the wind and give viewers the raw goods. If that is, in fact, the case, then maybe the only way to get true hardcore action is for poz guys to be the only ones on camera, in order that inhibitions are a non-issue. Porn is an awesome way of vicariously experiencing a sexual fantasy: we wanna watch our porn stars do what we would never in our right minds do ourselves—and that means watching raw sex and cumshots galore. That kind of gay porn is very much on the rise—and, safe or not, I’m happy to watch.

What’s missing is a little something called Production Value. The folks producing straight porn have a better handle on how to make the video itself. I don’t just mean the lighting, camera work, and editing—I’m talking about the choices made for the scene being shot. That’s my main issue. Lemme ‘splain:

1. A scenario is to be shot.

2. The individuals on-camera have all agreed ahead of time what will be done.

3. When those pre-determined acts are in play, the camera has to then be in the exact spot it needs to be in order to see things in all their slutty glory.

4. Edit out the crap we’d fast-forward past while watching

Gay porn still struggles with point 3. And 4, actually. Far too often I find myself frustrated that I can’t even see the goods cuz the camera’s pointed at something else. Or it looks amateur. (BTW—I understand the attraction of amateur/covert porn, captured “real-life” in some bathhouse or public space. That’s not what I’m referring to. That kind of “amateur porn” is a genre unto itself.) Or it’s too dark. Or I have to zip past 20 minutes of shagging-in-one-position just to get to a flip. With very few exceptions, the makers of gay porn have yet to match their straight porn brothers and sisters when it comes to production know-how.

It’s all do-able. And it only keeps getting better. I just want more. More better, please. I want cockporn, not pussyporn, to rule.

Be safe!
